Sri Lanka's Sacred Heart

Sri Lanka's Sacred Heart

Nestled in the forested fringes 4km from the main city — the ancient outer sanctum where the gods move quietly among the trees and monkeys keep watch over the shrines.
Sella Kataragama is the outer sacred settlement of the greater Kataragama pilgrimage complex, located 4–5 kilometres from the main city along the forest road. Unlike the busy main complex, Sella retains a wilder, more primordial quality — shrines half-swallowed by jungle, monkeys moving through the canopy, and birdsong filling the silences between prayers.
This area holds particular significance in the legend of Valli Amma — the beautiful Vedda hunter's daughter with whom the god Kataragama (Skanda-Murugan) fell in love. Many of the sites here are directly connected to that ancient story, making Sella Kataragama a place where mythology and sacred geography are inseparably entwined.
