Kataragama is nestled in Sri Lanka's Southern Province, within the Hambantota District, at the edge of the Yala wilderness. The sacred city sits along the banks of the Manik Ganga (River of Gems) — a river believed by pilgrims to have purifying properties.

The landscape transitions from semi-arid scrubland to dense tropical forest as you move toward Yala National Park, just 25 kilometers to the east. This proximity to one of Asia's premier wildlife sanctuaries makes Kataragama a unique destination where sacred traditions and wild nature coexist.
