Kiri Vehera
An impressive ancient Buddhist stupa dating back to the 3rd century AD, standing as a testament to Sri Lanka's rich Buddhist heritage.
Stupa Overview
Kiri Vehera is an impressive white dagoba (stupa) located in Kataragama, standing approximately 29 meters (95 feet) tall. It is one of the most important Buddhist monuments in the region and is believed to have been built during the reign of King Mahasena (AD 276–303).
The name "Kiri Vehera" translates to "Milk Stupa" in Sinhala, referring to its pristine white appearance. The stupa is situated north of the main Kataragama temple complex and is an important place of worship for Buddhist pilgrims visiting the area.
Historical Significance
According to legend, Kiri Vehera marks the spot where the Buddha meditated during his third visit to Sri Lanka. It is also associated with King Dutugemunu (161-137 BC), who is said to have built a stupa at this location. The current structure dates to the Anuradhapura period and has been renovated several times throughout history.
Architectural Features
Kiri Vehera follows the classic bell-shaped design of Sri Lankan stupas. It is constructed using brick and covered with white plaster, giving it its distinctive appearance. The stupa is surrounded by a paved courtyard and features a square harmika (a box-like structure) at the top, crowned by a spire.
